As we move into 2024 the Aviation industry has not slowed down and we can expect a lot of things to happen in 2024. Today I look at some key events which are set to happen in 2024 in the aviation industry.
It is almost certain that 2024 will be a big year for sustainability. November 2023 saw Virgin Atlantic operate a flight from London Heathrow to New York JFK using 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). More developments will likely be made with Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and more airlines may operate flights on either 50% SAF or 100% SAF.
Recent years have seen several geopolitical disruptions to the industry. The Russia-Ukraine conflict has seen the closure of Russian airspace to many European airlines and the recent Israel-Gaza conflict has seen some airlines suspend services to Tel Aviv, however, some airlines, such as Lufthansa, have plans to restart services soon. These disruptions, along with others, will likely have an impact on many airlines this year.
Airbus is working towards entry into service of the A321XLR in 2024. The aircraft has a range of 4,700 nautical miles. Airbus is also looking to increase its cargo business in the U.S. by flying its Beluga aircraft to the U.S.A. for charter cargo flights.
Boeing is anticipating the first delivery of the 737 MAX 10 in 2024. The 777X is set to enter service in 2025 but many important tests will have to take place this year to ensure it can enter service.
2024 will hopefully see a decision regarding London Heathrow Airport's 3rd Runway. A third runway would add capacity for up to 260,000 flight movements annually.
The Farnborough Air Show is set to take place this year from the 22nd - 26th July 2024.
